Why you need maintenance care...by the numbers!
Posted on 2012-02-01 11:21:30
Maintenance care is routinely recommended by most chiropractors. Maintenance care by its very definition is coming in to be "checked", even if you do not have any symptoms. In fact, true maintenance care would never have the patient complaining of any aches, pains, stiffness, or other complaints. The chiropractor would be "checking" to see if you have any misalignments caused by muscle tightness, resulting in restrictions in movement and/or nerve irritation. The restrictions in motion cause people to be less mobile, more prone to injury, and more likely to develop degenerative arthritis. Many people take advantage of this care to enjoy a higher quality of life and to save health costs.
So, "where's the beef!" Here are some of the stats showing the benefits of maintenance care from the research literature:
The RAND corporation found that geriatric patients under continuing chiropractic care were free from the use of a nursing home (95.7% vs. 80.8%), free from hospitalization over the past 23 years (73.9% vs. 52.4%), more likely to report a better health status, more likely to exercise vigorously, and more likely to be mobile in the community (69.6% vs. 46.8%).
Another review found direct costs (hospital care, physicians' services, nursing home) of maintenance care chiropractic patients' costs of $3105 vs. patients receiving no maintenance care at $10,041. A savings of $6936!
A study implementing an onsite industrial chiropractic program of 2 days per week for 21 months found a decrease in the total number of days of lost time, costs per claim, rate premiums, and surgeries. Cost savings from the avoided surgeries alone was $900,000!
Another study divided patients into 3 groups, one group got 12 treatments of fake adjustments, one group got 12 real adjustments, and the last group got 12 real adjustments followed by 2 treatments per month the following 10 months. Guess which group did the best at the end of the 10 months? Clearly, the group who did the maintenance care did the best!
So, if you were thinking "I don't need it", you may want to re-evaluate!
Orthotics Helps Improve Alignment for Pain Management
Posted on 2012-01-27 08:54:34
The word orthotics comes from the Greek word meaning to align or straighten. At our Grand Rapids chiropractic clinic, our chiropractor recommends that patients wear orthotic inserts in their shoes to complement any chiropractic care and rehabilitation they receive at our clinic. The feet play a huge role in a person's day to day life. Unfortunately, the feet are often overlooked, treated poorly or crammed into ill-fitting or otherwise uncomfortable shoes. An orthotic insert holds the foot in a position that allows it to function at its best, so that the spine and other areas of the body are not forced out of alignment. Orthotics improves the posture of the entire body by improving the position of the foot.
Arch Support from Orthotics
At our clinic, pain management is one of our goals. Spinal adjustments and massage therapy relieve back pain and other aches in a patient's body. Orthotic inserts in the shoes also manage and relieve pain, as the inserts keep the feet supported and in alignment. There are several arches on the foot that need to be properly supported so that people do not experience back pain or foot problems. If a single arch fails to have proper support, it can put stress and strain on the other arches in the feet, leading to debilitating problems. An orthotic insert gives each arch the support it needs, making it more comfortable for a person to stand and walk about in a pair of shoes.
Have you tried orthotic inserts? Did they relieve your pain?
Debunking the Myths of What to Expect During a First Visit to a Grand Rapids Chiropractor
Posted on 2012-01-13 13:52:32
There is an air of mystery surrounding what happens during a visit to a chiropractor. Many of our first-time patients who visit us here at Peak Performance Chiropractic in Grand Rapids, Michigan are nervous and anxious when they arrive for their first appointment. Our doctors and office staff strive to make you feel welcome and relieve the stress associated with a first visit to a clinic such as ours. However, developing an understanding for what to expect during your first office visit can help relieve some of the stress and anxiety a first-time patient feels.
Expectations for a First Visit to the Chiropractor for Pain Management
First-time patients are often nervous because they have developed an unrealistic image of how that first appointment should go. The truth is whether you come to our chiropractic clinic for pain management, back pain, headache, arthritis, or any other reason, the first visit generally is a “getting to know you” session. Our chiropractors will ask you about your medical history, why you are seeking care, and what you expect from your treatments. These questions allow us to get a better understanding of what brings you to our clinic, and how we can design a treatment plan specific to you.
Only after a diagnosis and treatment plan has been developed will we conduct any alignments or adjustments in our office. One of the best ways to get an idea as to what to really expect at your first visit is to tune into our Youtube channel. Our channel has videos of our chiropractor that will walk you through several typical office visits.
What do you typically expect to see, or have done, on a first visit to our clinic?
